Birthdays

If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday, please feel free to bring in a treat for the class. Larger cakes do pose an issue as we do not keep knives in the classroom. Cupcakes or ice blocks are preferred over whole cakes; however, if you do bring a cake, please ensure it is pre-cut to cater for the 30 students within the class.

Late Policy

There is a procedure that needs to be followed if your child is not in class by 8:40. Students will need to sign into the office before walking to the classroom. Please do not escort your child to the classroom if he/she is late as it is imperative that he/she is signed in through the office.

Library Borrowing

We are lucky enough to have an incredible library at St Bernardine's. Therefore, it is extremely important that your child is borrowing each week. The library borrowing days for each class are listed below:

5G, 5M, 5N - Mondays

 Sport

More information on the commencement of interschool sport will be posted later in the term.

Year 5 will be taking part in PE on Wednesdays. Students will therefore need to wear their sports uniform on Wednesdays and Fridays

Classroom Technology

Each Year 5 class will have access to a set of 15 laptops to be integrated throughout our classroom learning experiences. We are very fortunate to have access to these devices and will therefore be educating the students about the importance of safe and responsible device use.

Curriculum & Reporting

Throughout the year, the students will participate in a variety of assessment tasks that will contribute to the final grades for Semester 1 and 2 report cards. These tasks will be marked against a criteria sheet, which will be made available and deconstructed with the students prior to the assessment task commencement. A five point scale - A to E - will be used to grade students on their classroom work. The 'C' level of this scale represents the expected level of achievement at a Year 5 standard. Therefore, any student who receives a 'C' should be congratulated on his/her excellent work in meeting the Year 5 curriculum. Furthermore, whilst a 'B' is considered to be above the expected level,  an 'A' represents work that is well above the expected level. It should be noted that in this day in age, with the use of the Australian Curriculum, it is rare to receive an A, as it is far beyond what is expected for a Year 5 student.

St Bernardine's Behaviour Policy

St Bernardine’s is a Christ-centred environment where students, and student behavioural expectations, are based on the life of Jesus, as communicated to us through the Gospel. We also believe in the innate “goodness” of all our students. Within our Year 5 classroom, the students and I will construct a Vision Statement that spells out the joint expectations for creating a productive, happy and effective learning environment. Students will be taught these behaviours and will be expected to make everyday choices based on the values embedded within the Vision Statement. Whilst staff will model, break down and reinforce the expectations of the classroom and school, it is ultimately each child’s responsibility to make good choices in their academic and social interactions.

St Bernardine's Behaviour Policy incorporates four fundamental rules that govern the way that students interact within the school. These rules are as follows:

1. Speak to please, not to tease

2. Signal to speak and move

3. What the teacher says, we do

4. Hands and feet off other people and their things

These rules will be embedded within our class Vision statement and must be adhered to at all times, or the four step program will be implemented. This four step program begins with a warning, where the students will be made aware of their behaviour. This is an opportunity for the student to make better choices. If the behaviour continues, students will be placed on step one. If there is still no change in behaviour, students will advance to Step 2, and so on and so forth.

1. Stand behind chair for 2min

2. Student moved to back of room where he/she will not be able to participate in the lesson

3. Student moved to door - unable to participate in lesson

4. Student is removed and will spend time in office devising a behaviour plan
